Good Afternoon Panel of Funding Committee of Children’s Cancer Foundation.

I would like to thank you for this opportunity to present my proposal on setting up support groups for children cancer patients.

This is truly a celebration – a celebration of the Foundation’s effort to help children cancer patients gain a life of normalcy.

Every year, preschoolers enter formal schooling, twelve-year-olds step into a secondary school and secondary fours choose whether to attend a college or a polytechnic.

Every year, 1500 children under the age of fifteen are diagnosed with cancer.

Though the frequency of the treatments is the same as adult cancer patients, they are more severely impacted by the diagnosis.

As they are developing physically, the growing tissues of the child aid the spread of metastastic tissues.

Coupled with the lack of maturity to face the illness, children are most physically and psychologically affected by the frightening disease.

At this very moment, as we sit here, children around the world are attending school, playing soccer, reading literature, surfing the internet, fiddling with the latest gadgets and rocking to the latest pop songs.

Children are also physically and mentally drained from cancer; they lost their precious hair, they are ostracized by their classmates; they miss lesson regularly and they struggle to keep pace in class.

Not only do they have to battle with their own demon, their siblings are jealous of the attention parents shower on them. My Sister’s Keeper depicts the battle of Kate against leukemia and against Anna, for Anna was distraught that she was born with the purpose of saving her sister. In the individualized therapeutic play they attend, they draw pictures and the psychologist has warped interpretations of their mixed feelings.

Most give up and let nature take its course.

The battle has to be won in the mind.

Support groups lead by an adult cancer survivor could be formed among children cancer patients to give them the willpower and determination to overcome cancer.

According to the Straits Times (Home, October 10, 2009), breast cancer patients in the Volunteer Counselling Programme responded that the best person to provide encouragement is one who has gone through a similar psychological war of cancer and has emerged victorious.

In support groups, children will feel more comfortable sharing their troubles who is fighting a similar psychological war. Besides providing moral and emotional support for one another, they forge life-long friendships that will pull them through life’s other obstacles.

Engaging in therapeutic play within the support groups will show great leaps in the children’s thinking, bringing them one step closer to winning the war.

Daniel Spiegel, an M.D. from Stanford has researched extensively on this topic for a decade.

Group therapy not only allows patients to see multiple perspectives of a situation, but also recognize that patients can model after others in a group to discover the perfect solution to the problem. With interaction in a group comes enhanced social skills.

In 1993, Spiegel presented his findings. To the scientific community, he mentioned, “The support groups we formed [for breast cancer patients] offered far more than hand-holding and good wishes. The sessions became a time and a place for women to express their deepest fears. […] The groups provided a setting in which they could deal with their fears.

There may be doubts on the sustainability of the programme. Do not fret, for we could provide a series of professional training for the volunteers, equip them with counseling skills through theory lessons and practice on their groups,  allow them to share their learnings and experiences at monthly meetings and attach younger volunteers to more seasoned ones to learn the ropes.

Let the psychological battle children cancer patients struggle today with be our call to action.

And let us heed the call so that we can create an organization in which every child is loved.

Thank you for your attention.

art imitates life, life imitates art

Wrote this a while ago, and ho-ho, i didn't put the date! But i want to type it out so if i lose the paper i always have a soft copy! :P

Art and life are interconnected. our ancestors invented forms of art to enrich their lives. Art imitates life in its realism portrayed in movies, such as the way people react in a situation and the social norms depicted in pictures. Often, art forms like visual arts, dance and music depict the artists' lives and feelings about certain situations. For example, the dream tone of Debussy's music illustrates his fantasies, the dance movements of The Rite of Spring imitate a tribal human sacrificial dance and impressionist painters pour forth their feelings by varying the colour, tone and texture of paintings. In fact, art imitates life more often than we can imagine.

Life, too, imitates art to the same extent. Some famous quotes we use can be attributed to the success of the movies. For example, "I'll be back" comes from the movie, Terminator, and has since gained popularity. Many aim for an extravagant lifestyle with lavish cars and butlers that are often seen in movies, showing the powerful influence art has on life. various idealogies portrayed in movies, painting, music and dance have been incorporated in life. For example, many young people dream of a wedding of the bride in a lovely, pure white gown walking down the aisle to the groom in a suit to the music of the Wedding March, because most marriages in art conveys that fantasy. Also, some fictional technological gadgets are slowly beginning to materialise in reality, such as spy gear and touch screen phones. Years ago, when The Incredibles was screened, the high-tech way of entering into Emma's house via face detection, voice detection and fingerprint detection was a new technology. Today, it is not uncommon to use one's fingerprint in place of a key into a house.

The relationship between art and life is a symbiotic one; both can do without each other but neither can flourish without the other.

Being a Wide Reciever

I remember my primary school friend writing this in my autograph book, which i still have on my shelf: Smile and the world smiles with you, weep and you weep alone.

So smile! :P It makes you more relaxed, it makes you happier, and it makes those around you even happier! There are so many benefits of smiling; i just can't list them down. Its good to smile, its great to keep a positive attitude; after all, it is your attitude that determines your altitude.

http://dreamisnotforsale.com/become-a-wide-receiver/
1. Do you suffer from Poor Receiver Complex? You do if you:
-Think that what goes up must always go down. Good things are always followed by bad ones. [Never, I always keep an optimistic attitude!]
-Cringe or feel uncomfortable when people compliment you. [Never, i love compliments, because it tells me my good points!]
-Shrug off compliments: Aww, i'm not that good. [Most Asians do this! And i'm guilty of this too!]
-Feel obligated when someone gives you a gift. [Yeah, sometimes]
-Made excuses for your success: Because there wasn't many people to begin with, so i won. [Uh oh. I do this too! Like, physics quiz was easy so i got a high score.]

2. How can you improve your receiving ability?
-"I receive that"
-Don't shrug off the compliment; receive it!
-If you can't receive a compliment, how can you receive higher levels of success?
And remember, Your Dream Is Not For Sale! Go pursue it, and don't let other things get in your way!

Glass Containers

Glass containers take all shapes and sizes but they are all made up of the same material, glass. The only thing that sets them apart is the different moulds through which their molten state is put to produce the different containers. Another main thing which sets them apart is the different uses assigned to the various glass containers, but whatever their use, its brilliance shimmers with pride -- the same light bore by all of humankind.

People are like glass containers. We are more or less biologically the same bu the two things that set us apart from each other are the different experiences we go through which mould us personality wise and the special dreams each and every one of us want to achieve in life. In the face of our dreams, we are transparent and pure, just like glass, in our pursuits, and reaching for our desires where we can see them.
