We went JB to watch Avatar yesterday! So sad it isn't in 3D if not the special effects and the graphics would have been so coolllll and i'll be so fascinated at catching those glow in the dark organisms on Pandora. Pandora is such a nice planet! I so love it and i wish it were real so that i could live there! And the high-tech space system is really cool too! That's so advanced in time, pro scriptwriter :D
The special effects and the graphics were super good! But the storyline was disappointing though. Well, its a trade-off i guess. Maybe Jake could explain more why he wanted to save Pandora because it doesn't seem right; you usually defend your own race -- the human race, right? The story has three parts, all recorded through Jakes video-log. Part 1: Before going into Avatar body. Jake tells how he ends up here in replacement of his dead twin brother who spent 3 years training for this mission. Part 2: Jake in Avatar body, learning the ways of the Na'vi. I love this part the best because I love the cute culture and ways of the Navi. And I especially like the interconnectivity of everything, where Na'vis could make connections using their long braid with other animals to tame them, and also by looking into their hearts. Part 3: Jake trying to save Pandora; this one isn't that nice, but it ends up as Jake being permanently to sleep, waking up in the Avatar body.

Happy Birthday Mummy! Thank you for taking care of me for sixteen years and never complaining though your job is slightly tougher because of my heart problem which gave you a lot of worries too! But you still raised me up perfectly and gave me such a wonderful home, wonderful family and helped me in my studies in primary school so i can go to such a wonderful school!
I watched 2012 yesterday! Okay, the effects weren't as dramatic as Ms Chin described such that when the earthquake happened, you could feel the entire cinema shake. But they were fantastic! It was a long show, but catastrophe after catastrophe didn't make the time feel like 2 hours and 37 minutes had passed. Though I must admit, there were some unrealistic portions in the show, such as how can they escape unscathed when the fireballs were raining down like fireworks! :D
And we went shopping at Johore today! We ate some Korean BBQ food for lunch which was cooked by true koreans and and... mummy bought me a gown for prom! Though it should be that we buying a gown for her birthday. She was saying that other sec 4 girls were having proms and graduation nights and I didn't have but since I would have one soon, if we should see a beautiful gown, I can buy it! I don't know if that gown is considered beautiful (its definitely not as nice as Nes' gown and other gowns that were worn during this year's prom that i saw on facebook) but its specially chosen by mummy so i'll say its nice. I didn't get a proper look at it while fitting because I was way too sleepy :/
I simply cannot understand how people can study with loud rock music blasting in the background. The fact that you are singing to the music shows that you are not concentrating on your work and are listening to the music instead. Mummy says that your mind switches to and fro music and work; for me, i simply cannot stand any sort of music in the background, even classical music, because for classical music i would tend to listen to the details and figure out who wrote that and when the composer wrote that music.
Yesterday, there was a SNGS CO gathering at my condo. The girls were making a whole load of noise and we couldn't concentrate on what we were doing. I can't concentrate on reading my lovely book and my sister can't concentrate on doing her chinese homework (yes, they have holiday homework) since our silence was constantly punctuated by the loud screams and laughter of the girls from 5 storeys away. Worse still, i know a few of them personally which gives me an even worse impression of them than before. My good impression, once ruined is ruined forever.
Yet i still completed reading Pride and Prejudice. It is much easier to read after watching the movie. If i were to read the book first, i could have been bored to death, but the movie had made all the characters alive and the scenery so beautiful. And because this 1995 version of the movie really preserves all the conversation (except that they add actions to it) in the book so the book is really easy to follow. And I do love Elizabeth's wit and countering Lady Catherine, who opposed her marriage. And it was really sweet in the end that Mr Darcy had a change in character and was more humbled. But there was no kissing scene in the book, which the movie ended of with, so that's something different; after all, movie adaptations of books are seldom accurate.
And so we finished watching the classic Pride and Prejudice! Though most of the time i didn't quite understand their language, and thanks to the speaker that was just behind me, i caught most of the meaning. Its strange, Elizabeth and Darcy's love for each other is quite strong, yet they are holding back their love. Why don't they just express it to each other? Same with Bingley and Jane, they love each other dearly but due to the lack of communication, many misunderstandings form. And i don't get how that is a proposal for marriage, isn't it just some random conversation? The word "marriage" didn't even pop up in the conversation and bingo! You two are engaged! :O
Anyway, much as my sister complain that the show is boring, i actually enjoy it. It's a period drama that's why. I like it because you get to see how people think and act in the olden days and how their balls look like and how they dress to impress. And i did hear a harpsichord! Cool right? Caroline could play Turkish March so well, on the harpsichord! (Okay, maybe she just moved her hands and pretended, but the person who played it was brilliant!)
Vanity and pride are different things, though the words are often used synonymously. A person may be proud without being vain. Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves, vanity to what we would have others think of us. To yield without conviction is no compliment to the understanding of either. "And your defect is a propensity to hate everybody." "And yours," he replied with a smile, "is willfully to misunderstand them" "An unhappy alternative is before you, Elizabeth. From this day you must be a stranger to one of your parents. Your mother will never see you again if you do not marry Mr. Collins, and I will never see you again if you do." (I so love Mr Bennet's wit!) "For what do we live, but to make sport for our neighbours, and laugh at them in our turn?" (Another one!) "In vain I have struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you." (But there's no awwww effect because they say it so... prim and proper) "I cannot fix on the hour, or the look, or the words, which laid the foundation. It is too long ago. I was in the middle before I knew that I had begun." (And Mr Darcy love Elizabeth! Like duh... But its not really about him winning her heart directly with sweet words and more but by his actions and care for her sisters)
There's been a lot of debates about learning chinese in the papers nowadays. For example, this lady migrated to Australia 20 years ago to spare her son the agony of learning chinese. Today in the Forum page, one parent commented that schools should teach more vocabulary and idioms and whatever that would be tested in the o levels; in other words, don't test things that are not taught.
Which makes me wonder, is chinese really that difficult to learn? Perhaps these children weren't given a conducive environment to learn (like speaking chinese to their parents/grandparents or to friends from China). Or perhaps they just didn't put in the extra-curricular effort like reading books or even listening to songs (Yanling learnt 坎坷from one chinese song!) After all, chinese is your mother tongue, shouldn't you learn to like it or appreciate it? Or perhaps, schools should teach the chinese culture and china's history first and let students learn the language at the same time; that way, there is more motivation and interest in the language. I remember TPL saying that Ernest's chinese is rather good, he just doesn't put in effort (or something like that). So with effort, anything can be done, right?
I don't know, but this makes me think of something else: the multiple complaints about the PSLE math paper being so tough. I remember reading one forum article (see forum articles are good sources of information, albeit personal views) that the paper must be made tough to distinguish the good students from the average ones. Parents usually complain that the paper comes up with never-seen-before questions that students can't solve with routine maths techniques; it involves more thinking, and that's what the paper is all about.
It's the same in our school; only when you have been in such a system that stimulates and promotes thinking will you truly learn and appreciate the value of the knowledge you have because they are well-deserved. Our math honours paper is intentionally tough and it's good challenge for the mind. It makes you think and it teaches you to think. That's what makes the society progress. Without thinking, there'll be no innovation and without innovation, things like the telephone and the internet would not come about. And if there is no innovation the country only has one other means -- to copy other countries. But copying does no good because copying never allows one to make a statement and you can never truly copy everything perfectly.
So quit complaining and start working. Work on your thinking skills because that will bring you far. I know, my balance sheet is not balanced and my gross profit doesn't add up, but i'm thinking about how to manipulate the numbers to get the correct value and that will take time to start my brain into that mode.
Daddy borrowed Pride and Prejudice, the DVD movie from the library today! Okay, it isn't very nice because it's very draggy and the scenes are super long and it's in pure British english, but it's very enjoyable. The scenery is breath-taking and the costumes and their rituals (or mannerisms) are very elaborate, something you would never find today. It gives me pleasure (together with boredom) to watch this show from the Victorian Era.
